El Travertino – Laguna Lengua |
The natural dam to the waters of fifteen lagoons in the High Guadiana is, undoubtedly, one of the most impressive highlights of all the peninsular nature. Accumulated waters in the Campo de Montiel aquifer surface the river through different springs loaded with minerals while suffering different biological and chemical changes, this will unleash the formation of different travertins.
After their formation, they will work as dikes to dam the water being these Ruidera’s typical tophaceous barriers. Also, in the water edge of lagoons these tophaceous barriers are formed. Laguna de la Lengua, probably one of the most spectacular, is the best example to view this geological wonder and even to examine remnants of ancient travertins.
